​Guwahati: It appears smugglers want to exploit the flooded river Simsang and Chillai before the water level goes down. As these rivers have been main routes for smuggling wooden logs, coal and bamboo from India to Bangladesh.

Despite of best efforts put in by vigilant troops of the BSF, the smuggling bid continue unabated through these major rivers in Meghalaya.

Within last two days the BSF has seized huge quantity of wooden logs i.e 142.84 Cft, Bamboo 500 nos and coal 10 tons while being smuggled through Simsang river in area of Baghmara, South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.

Coal and wooden logs are concealed with bamboo rafts.

The timber is marked and tied up with sacks of coal. The heavily flooded river through pose severe threat to the BSF troops still they jump into the river to foil such illegal acts and catch these heavy rafts.

Similarly, the BSF in a joint operation with forest department seized more than 3000 pieces of bamboo from river Chillai in area of Ryngku, East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya few days back.

The BSF troops of Meghalaya Ftr seized 4889.124 Cft wooden logs worth Rs. 1,36,56,440 till August 31 during this year. The seizure was so enormous that it took several days to ascertain the quantity of bamboos.

In another incident, the BSF troops once again seized 15 Nos cattle worth over Rs. 2.5 lacs in the area of Ganganagar, West Khasi Hills and Nongjuri, East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya on international border while being smuggled to Bangladesh.

Due to strict vigilance by the BSF troops smugglers finding it difficult to cross the animals to Bangladesh. The cattle demand in Bangladesh thus increasing manifolds. The cattle smugglers are still applying several tactics to smuggle for want of hefty profit.

The BSF has increased its extra vigil along International Border keeping in view of cattle smuggling. The Border Security Force has intensified its operations on the Indo-Bangladesh Border to prevent any type of trans-border crimes. All the seized items handed over to concerned department for further legal action.
