More than 8 persons struck dead by lightning galesNellore: Due to depression in the Bay of Bengal along the coast, unseasonal rains and gales were observed for the past two days in Nellore district. Farmers have suffered heavy loss as crops that were ready for harvest got destroyed. Vegetable crops were destroyed in AS Peta, Atmakur, Marripadu, Vinjamur, Kaligiri, Kondapuram, Duttaluru and Varikuntapadu mandals. In Vinjamur alone, farmers incurred a loss of Rs 2 crore. Almost 50 acres of mango orchards and 275 acres of banana plantations were affected. Apart from crop loss, over eight persons were struck died by lightning in the district. The agriculture and horticulture departments are analysing the loss incurred by the farmers due to unseasonal rains and gales. Vinjamur horticulture officer A Pradeep Kumar and agriculture officer Sudharani have analysed the damage that occurred on Monday due to unseasonal rains. Speaking to The Hans India, the officers said that they would send a representation on the amount of loss incurred by the farmers due to the unseasonal rains.
