When one talks about inter linking of rivers, many applaud it as the next big thing to happen. But decades passed ever since the word was coined and nothing positive has happened in reality.

However, with the BJP getting full majority at the Centre, talk about interlinking of rivers is gaining momentum.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister of drinking water and sanitation (DWS) has already written to Water resources ministry headed by Uma Bharati to prepare a roadmap. Many hope that once river waters are linked, drinking water problem will be solved.
As per the plan, 10 rivers of Himalayan component and 16 rivers of Peninsular component are in the process of getting interlinked.
However, many states are opposing interlinking of rivers and they include Maharashtra, West Bengal, Kerala,Tamil Nadu, Telangana etc. Many states feel since water is a state issue, it is an infringement to the power of federal structure.
At the same time they feel interlinking of rivers will deprive them of the right share of river waters. It is a daunting task on the Union Goverment and requires deftness, skills and statesmanship from various leaders at state and the centre.
