Last partnership summit promised 6 lakh jobs. Where are they?
Denial of Special Category Status on legal grounds roused the sentiments of Andhra people and the dissent failed to die down with the special package. Especially, youth and students feel betrayed leading to unrest which acted as an ignition for the R K Beach protest. According to reports, unemployment is on the rise in the State though the TDP came to power with a catchy slogan, “Job ravalante Babu ravali,” meaning if anyone needs a job Chandrababu should come to power
What was considered as a deadwood till the other day came alive on the 68th Republic Day in the successor AP like a ghost stalking the ruling class. The Facebook generation gave a fresh lease of life to the contentious Special Category Status (SCS) issue which slipped into the annals of the state bifurcation after announcement of a special package by the NDA government as a substitute.
movement on the Marina Beach in Chennai, on the Rishi Konda Beach in Visakhapatnam for a different cause.
The media, fond of using catchy epithets, described the SCS protest as “Andhra Spring on the RK beach.” The so-called RK spring protest on the R-Day threw open a slew of issues for public debate such as the fate of right to freedom of expression guaranteed by the Indian Constitution, use and misuse of social media and the State’s repression, heating up Andhra political landscape. The opposition parties got into a battle fatigue to take the protest of the “Young Turks” into their stride. As a result, the festive mood on the Republic Day was overshadowed by massive protests all over the State, defying the blanket ban imposed by the police.
However, the beach protest failed to become a reality as the beach for a 7km stretch was sealed by the eagle-eyed police and groups of protesters were huddled into police vans then and there much before they set their foot on the beach.
The latest SCS stir saw visible cracks in the ruling NDA-TDP-JSP alliance firmament and harmony in the voices of leaders of opposite camps – Jana Sena leader Pawan Kalyan and YSRC chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy. Consequently, the friends turned foes for a while as Pawan and his allies started training guns against each other. PK (Pawan Kalyan) accused Union Minister Y Sujana Chowdary and MP Rayapati Sambhasiva Rao of flourishing their business interests by compromising on the burning issues faced by the state like the SCS. In retaliation, HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao alleged that the Jana Sena is playing into the hands of Jagan who is allegedly out to play spoilsport for the TDP’s government’s painstaking efforts to build the truncated state as a “sunrise AP”.

According to reports, unemployment is on the rise in the State even as the TDP came to power with a catchy slogan, “Job ravalante Babu ravali,” meaning if anyone needs a job Chandrababu should come to power. The promise sees hardly any signs of realisation as the government did not take full-fledged measures to fill 1.42 lakh jobs in 157 government departments. Besides, around five lakh students pursuing professional courses like engineering are coming out of colleges every year with poor job prospects. This unrest appeared to have fueled the Facebook-driven protest.
The mood of the students and youth could be gauzed from the statement of one Satish, who claimed to have belled the cat for the beach protest. The state is failing to achieve progress industrially, post bifurcation due to lukewarm response from investors for want of incentives, which ought to have been extended by the Centre had the SCS become a reality. The poor industrial growth means higher unemployment levels, was the Satish’ refrain.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu feared the agitations of the sort of beach protest ahead of the partnership summit might shoo away investors. Naidu asserted that he was striving hard to create pro-industry climate by organising the investors’ summits every year, enabling MoUs with investors to set up industries. The latest summit, the government claims, may in all likelihood offer 2.87 lakh jobs in private sector in case all the MoUs materialised. The summit in the previous year promised 6 lakh jobs. The youth organisations remained skeptical over such official claims due to the alleged poor prospects of MoUs becoming a reality for different reasons.
