Everyone owns a different sense of humour and unless the level of humour matches, it cannot be appreciated. However, in relationships, partners never communicate if one feels the humour has crossed the line or are offensive as they are worried of actually being blunt.
Everyone owns a different sense of humour and unless the level of humour matches, it cannot be appreciated. However, in relationships, partners never communicate if one feels the humour has crossed the line or are offensive as they are worried of actually being blunt. The habit of offensive humour may actually drive a wedge with questioning begins over the partner’s compassion, taste, open-mindedness and many more.
The fine line between comedy and comments can be expressed with effective communication without offending the one you love.
Here are some guidelines to follow with effective communication:
Question your reaction:
If you feel offended or annoyed by the joke your partner cracked, push aside your anger for a while and question the reason for being offended. Check whether the joke reminds you of a sensitive or unhealed place in your life. With the retrospect into your own life, you get a clearer view; instead of taking offense to the joke immediately, let your partner know the exact reason behind you feeling hurt.
Understand your partner’s thoughts:
Instead of jumping onto conclusions about the joke, try to reason it out before you react; give it a try from your partner’s point of view. If you are not sure about why your partner has come up with the joke, ask him/her to help you understand.
Subtle reaction:
When the time arrives to communicate to your partner that you don’t find the jokes funny, try to showcase it in a subtle way instead of blasting your frustration directly in a disappointed manner as criticism hurts when it is blown out of proportion.
Be honest and encourage your partner to come up with a different style of humour which will help your partner to think instead of cutting you off from the conversation.
Make your request:
Be specific about being offended by the constant habit of cracking jokes – if you find a particular genre jokes offensive, make your request to your partner not to repeat those jokes which makes you feel disrespected.
