Coimbatore: In continuation of his brilliant run, the Hyderabad-based Candidate Master R Raja Rithvik came up trumps yet again, this time in a bigger league. Displaying dexterity and making winning moves one after the other, Rithvik won the gold medal for Telangana State in the U-17 National Chess Championship-2017 with a superb performance here on Wednesday.

The ninth standard student of Orchids International School in Jubilee Hills aggregated nine points in 11 rounds to annex the national title. Barely 13, he outwits higher aged opponents with nonchalant ease, a calibre that has won him the appreciation of the veterans. The latest triumph is one more instance of this talent coming to the fore.

Meanwhile, in a rare showing the silver was also bagged by a rising player from Telangana State. E Arjun of Warangal took the honours with a tally of 8.5 points. Raja Rithvik, with an envious ELO rating of 2237, clinched the issue with an authoritative demolition of his Tamil Nadu opponent Tarun Kanth in the final round.

Raja Rithvik is a protégé of M Raja Raju at Race Chess Academy in Hyderabad. The young lad created history while becoming the first one to win both Under-13 and U-17 national titles in the same year. He accomplished this feat at Jalandhar. Telangana State Chess Association President A Narasimha Reddy and Secretary KS Prasad greeted both Raja Rithvik and Arjun for their superlative showing.
