2018 has been a year of brave and courageous women. We know that screen stories are inspired by real-life incidents. Interestingly, the reverse holds true as well — what is presented on the reel is heavily debated and discussed outside the television room. And thank god for that.

In recent years, we have witnessed some of the most amazing and groundbreaking female lead characters – women who do it all, women who are unapologetic about their likes and dislikes, women who are pressured to be submissive and women who have kicked ass! Overall, the last year has blown us with some never-seen-before content with shows that have women in lead.

These roles have been portrayed by the best lot of women actors and we can’t wait to watch what’s in store in the New Year. While we gear for 2019, here are some great shows that are a must watch as they break all mainstream cinema rules and make us cheer for ‘Girl Power’.

The Handmaid’s Tale
Winning various awards and accolades this show has broken every boundary of excellence be it the storyline or the acting, the show has covered it all with a brilliant star cast and amazing content. The story is a dystopian drama that covers the social and political disabilities in a fictional time where women were treated as slaves, run by a religious dictatorship in a place called Gilead in an attempt to control the atrocities of the world. The story focuses on one such woman Offred (played by Elisabeth Moss) and her continued struggle to get out of this hellhole in order to save her child and reunite with her family. It is a spine-chilling show that luckily for us airs on AXN every Monday at 10 pm.

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Set in the 1950’s Mrs Maisel is the epitome of women power as she embraces her dream of a stand-up comedian in a time where men dominated over every space. The series follows the story of Mrs Maisel a mother of two kids with a perfect husband and a perfect life. However, her life turns upside down when she decides to chase her dreams into reality facing the struggles along the way that disrupts her comfortable life as she makes her way through the city's comedy industry on a path that could ultimately lead her to a spot on the ‘Tonight Show’ couch.

Jessica Jones
For all the Marvel fans, this show is a definite must watch. But unlike all the superheroes like Iron Man and The Hulk, this show surrounds around the mysterious Jessica Jones and her story that starts after a tragedy ending her superhero life. She starts her own detective agency solving cases involving other superheroes. Trying to live by each day Jessica Jones is a show that will keep you entertained with some amazing chills and thrills throughout.

Madam Secretary
Political dramas have the wittiest characters and smart storylines. And ‘Madam Secretary’ is one such drama that is sharp and witty. The show focuses on Elizabeth McCord, an intelligent CIA analyst appointed as the State Secretary. She struggles to handle her work and family life as she tries to balance the two. The lead character portrayal by Tea Leoni is commendable as she so effortlessly plays the character that best reflects our everyday struggles. Orange is the New Black
This show has always been in the talks about the complete involvement of the women with a strong plotline that follows the story of Piper who gets imprisoned for a drug crime and her life thereafter in prison. Going strong through six seasons this show speaks the unspoken and covers all the taboos of society. A bold portrayal of the characters and the clean reality of life in prison and the different struggles of women. This is one of the shows that change the perception of the way people view things.

Big Little Lies
Played by three strong and rather the most loved Hollywood actresses Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley and Nicole Kidman ‘Big Little Lies’ is the story of three mothers and their once perfect life turned upside down due to a murder in their idyllic town. This series is gripping from the start to the end as the story immediately captures you throughout with its intense acting and a story full of surprises.

Sharp Objects
A psychological thriller that involves a series of jaw-dropping scenarios with crime reporter Camille Preaker as she returns to her hometown to solve a crime that leads her to confront the psychological demons from her past. The storyline will give you definite chills as Amy Adams kills it with her peculiar acting in the miniseries.

Killing Eve
This brilliantly portrayed series leads to a game of cat and mouse when Eve an MI5 officer is obsessed with hunting down the psychopathic assassin Villanelle. The series has a very refreshing perspective and full of entertainment. It is a mixture of drama and serious suspense but at the same time a lot of fun to watch.
