A recent study found that the percentage of people reporting less face-to-face time with family in their homes rose from 8 per cent in 2000 to 34 per cent in 2011.” Social media is making our society antisocial because it prevents us from interacting with each other face-to-face, it facilitates cyberbullying, and it makes people prone to isolation. Our society likes to look on social media to see what our peers are doing. However, social media can also be used to spread important information.

Information on social media can be very harmful to other people as it enables the spread of unreliable and false information. Over 49.1 per cent of people have heard false news via social media.” Not everything on social media is true or credible. For example, the information can make people look bad and, therefore, other peers won’t like them anymore. A false rumor can make everyone turn against that person and not talk to them. If everyone stops talking to you, you will start to become antisocial.

On the other hand, some people think social media makes us more social. One reason they might think so is because social networking sites allow people to improve their relationships and make new friends from all over the world. However, using social media to gain more friends can be a disadvantage. People who use social networking sites are prone to social isolation. Social networking can exacerbate feelings of disconnect and put children at a higher risk for depression and low self-esteem.

Even though you make new relationships on social networks, you lose your communication skills, which makes you antisocial. There are also many other reasons why social media is making us antisocial. Another reason social media makes our community antisocial is that it facilitates cyberbullying. People post annoying and offensive remarks to make other people argue. This is a very effective form of cyberbullying. This causes depression in children, teens and adults.

Depression can affect your interest in participating in daily activities, especially social activities. You lose your interest in social activities from depression, which makes you antisocial because you are non-communicative. Ultimately, social media is a disadvantage to mankind in many ways because it makes us antisocial. For example, false information and facilitation of cyber bullying can lead to a person being non-communicative. However, we like to use social media to make new relationships. Social media also makes us antisocial because we use social media too often, which makes us prone to isolation.
