Hyderabad: The TRS government will give top priority to minor irrigation sector to ensure that one lakh acre in each constituency is brought under irrigation , Minister T Harish Rao said on Monday.

Harish Rao said he would soon organise a meeting with GHMC and HMDA officials to safeguard water bodies (lakes and tanks) within Greater Hyderabad limits. The Irrigation Minister also warned of blacklisting contractors, who were found wanting.

The Minister held a review meeting with Irrigation department officials at Jalasoudha in the morning. Pointing out that his government had accorded high priority for revival of lakes and tanks in the districts, he called upon engineers to prepare proposals at the earliest. Lakes were major source of irrigation and drinking water in Telangana right since Kakatiyas ruled the region centuries ago.

Works should not be taken up just for the sake of it or to benefit contractors, Harish had stressed. The proposals suggested by AEs at the ground level should be verified by DEs and later on by EEs and SEs. Harish said that he would make surprise visits to districts to check progress on this.

The Irrigation Minister said the government was committed to complete irrigation projects that were in different stages of construction, especially in Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy districts. Loan from World Bank and other agencies would be sought for this purpose, he added.

Meanwhile, Harish Rao stated that the government would do what all it could to protect lakes and tanks from encroachment in the State capital. All departments, irrigation, revenue, civic body among others, would work in tandem for this. Soon a meeting would be convened with GHMC, HMDA and other departments to discuss about steps to protect lakes, he said.
