Hyderabad: The TRS and Congress party are at loggerheads over the issue of convening one day session of the State Legislative Council on June 2. While the government is all set to elect Swamy Goud as the Chairman and would ask him to file the nomination on Tuesday, the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Monday demanded that the Governor ESL Narasimhan withhold the election.

The party told the Governor that the TRS has taken a unilateral decision to convene the special session of the council and is a political game plan to install the party MLC as the Chairman by resorting to undemocratic methods.

A party delegation led by TPCC chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah and party floor leader in the Council D Srinivas met the Governor and submitted a memorandum, urging him to stop the election process in view of the pending decision on the disqualification of five Congress MLCs who defected to TRS recently. The delegation also lodged complaint against TRS for encouraging defections in the party to win the election for the Chairman post.

Speaking to newsmen, Lakshmaiah said issuing notification for the Chairman election was 'undemocratic. 'He claimed that the Congress was enjoying majority in the Upper House.

Srinivas said in case of elections, the party would issue a whip to its members and any violation would attract disqualification. The five MLCs who were "poached" by TRS recently should have resigned from their posts before joining the party, Srinivas said.

The TPCC chief held a meeting with his party MLCs on Monday and reportedly decided to field Farooq Hussain as its candidate against the TRS nominee for the Chairman's post. This is being seen as an attempt to put the five MLCs who had jumped over to TRS into trouble and see that they lose their membership.
