Nizamabad: Farmers who have been waiting for the Rs 9.8 crore arrears from the Government for the last seven years are going to receive the same due to the initiative taken by Armour MLA Jeevan Reddy. The farmers have been waging a relentless battle for the last seven years for the arrears and the successive governments refused to pay the amount.

It may be recalled that Nizamabad farmers who cultivated red jowars in 2007 did not get the full payment for their produce after a hybrid seed company purchased red jowars at the behest of the then collector, Ramanjaneyulu. However, the company had only paid Rs 32 crore as against the Rs 78 crore. The expressed its inability to pay the rest of the amount.

The farmers launched a massive agitation and several thousands of farmers reached Armour on June 16, 2008 and staged rasta roko. The agitating farmers went berserk and attacked the houses of seed traders Anand Reddy and Mahipal Reddy. They had even set three government vehicles on fire. In a bid to control the farmers, the police opened fire in which four farmers sustained bullet injuries.

The Government issued orders to purchase red jowar through AP Seeds Corporation. Later the government had seized three lakh quintals of red jowar from the traders and paid Rs. 35 crore to the farmers. However, the government assured the farmers that it would pay Rs. 10.83 crore to them. However, the never received the amount.After the formation of the Telangana Government, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao assured in a meeting on August 7, that the arrears would be paid.Armour MLA Jeevan Reddy had taken initiative in this regard. The chief minister has instructed the officials to prepare cheques to be handed over to the farmers in a couple of days. The officials would go to the farmers in their respective villages of Armour, Balkonda, Nizamabad rural constituencies and hand them over the cheques.
