Hyderabad: Institute for the Empowerment of Backward Classes, the first of its kind institution to document socio-economic profile of Other Backward Classes (OBC) was inaugurated by the Janata Dal (United) MP Sharad Yadav here on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Sharad Yadav exhorted the OBCs to unite in Telangana to form a government instead of taking subversive role in other parties. He spoke about transformation of political situation in north India after the Emergency. “The OBCs and Dalits have started asserting themselves politically and started forming state governments. He wondered why OBCs were not asserting in the south. Justice V Eshwariah, Chairman of National Commission for Other Backward Classes, commended the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP Devender Goud for establishing the institution in the city. “Discussion will lead to enlightenment and unity among OBCs,” he remarked.

Quoting official statistics, Eshwariah lamented that only 7 to 8 percent of jobs were filled as against 27 percent quota earmarked for OBCs. He appreciated the Intensive Household Survey conducted by the Telangana government as it would help identify the problems faced by the OBCs.

BJP senior leader Bandaru Dattatreya assured the gathering that he would take the issue of empowering the National Commission for OBCs on the lines of SC, ST panels to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier Devender Goud said that main objectives of the institute were to strengthen unity among BCs, encourage leadership, conduct research and extend legal support besides extending supporting to art and culture. He said the institute had well developed facilities including a meeting hall, a round table, training hall and discussion room equipped with latest technology like LCDs.

Justice M N Rao announced a donation of Rs 2 lakh to the library of the institute.
