Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Wednesday received flak from opposition parties over his remark that he would “bury the media 10km deep if it insults his state and its culture.”

While opposition BJP condemned the "undemocratic" language used by Rao at a function in Warangal on Tuesday, the Congress said the chief minister had "no clue about governance" and reminded him of the duty to safeguard media freedom. But the journalist fraternity seemed to have meekly surrendered to the chief minister who had threatened to break their neck and banish them from the State.

Reacting sharply to the adamant attitude of KCR, Congress leader Renuka Chowdhary said the chief minister's remark was "highly irresponsible".

Condemning the tone and tenor used by KCR, BJP State president G Kishen Reddy said Rao no Chief Minister could use this type of language. “BJP condemns KCR's statement. Nobody can take law into their hands. The situation in the media is tense. KCR is threatening reporters and media managements... 'If you don't support TRS, we will see your end, we will close your channels and we will close your media,” Kishen Reddy said, adding he would take up the matter with Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar when he visits the state on Thursday. But Javadekar was a little cautious in his reaction. Speaking to media in New Delhi, he said he would draw any conclusion in the reported threat to the media by the Telangana chief minister only after listening to both sides.

However, Rao's daughter and Telangana Rashtra Samithi MP K Kavita said the chief minister's comments about the media should not be seen in isolation as the TV channels which had been blocked were "demeaning the legislative system of Telangana.”

Meanwhile, journalists from the two Telugu News Channels for the second consecutive day staged a protest in front of the Raj Bhavan demanding the lifting of ban on their channels in Telangana. Police arrested about 70 employees of the two channels for staging a sit-in, seeking intervention of Governor ESL Narasimhan. Even the national media found fault with the TRS government for blocking the two media channels.
