Tandur (Ranga Reddy): Traders are stocking cigarette cartons in godowns to create artificial scarcity and selling at a higher price, taking advantage of a smoker’s weakness.
They are allegedly resorting to illegal transportation of stocks from Karnataka without paying taxes. An agency is said to be despatching the hoarded stock to Hyderabad to make a fast buck. This illegal trade is said to be causing loss to the government exchequer. Local residents allege that officials are overlooking such illegal activities for various considerations, including payment of ‘mamool’.
On Wednesday when HMTV/The Hans India cameraman was taking pictures of cigarette cartons being moved in an auto, a trader held out threats, behaving rudely with media persons.
