The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Government of Telangana collaborating with Art@Telangana announced an art camp to showcase the artistic talent of the state of Telangana. The 10-day camp would be held at Taramati Baradari between September 27 and October 6.
Art@Telangana is an initiative by a group of independent individuals with a vision to bring artists and artistic traditions from Telangana to the forefront. Under this initiative, an art camp would be conducted where a coffee table book and a website would be launched. Multiple art fairs would be held to showcase the artists' works portraying the culture and identity of Telangana. The vision of the group is to create a platform that endeavours to internationally showcase the works of eminent and budding artists from the state.
GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar, who is also the director of 11th Metropolis World Congress, said, “Through this camp we are trying to showcase the age old art of Telangana to the delegates of Metropolis World Congress as well as the general public. We are sure that our talented artists’ work would be a visual treat for our guests which would portray the local art form to the world at large.”
Historically, art has been an integral part of Telangana culture. Ramappa Temple built by the Kakatiyas is a symphony in stone. Buddhist sculptures of Nagarjuna Konda are revered as art pieces worldwide. The Deccan miniature paintings reflect the affluence of richness this land holds. Painters like Deuskar, PT Reddy, Sayyad Ahmed, Sayyad Bin Muhammad, Kumarila Swamy, K Rajayya, Kondapalli Sheshagiri Rao, Badri Narayan, Vasudev Kapatral and sculptors like Osman Siddiqi’s art works are timeless.
Fifty years ago expert painters like Lakshma Goud, Surya Prakash, Gouri Shankar, Vaikuntham, Devaraj, DLN Reddy, Daroz, Ravindar Reddy, Chintala Jagadish, Kavitha and Narendra Rai were the forerunners in this league of pioneering painters. They travelled across the world with their works, showcasing Telangana culture and heritage and won numerous accolades for their efforts.
Activities to promote local art would include:
Coffee Table Book
Under the guidance of Narsing Rao and Laxman Aeley a coffee table book, in which various works of 120 artists from Telangana, would be featured. The book would be unveiled by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at the Metropolis World Congress on October 7.
Art Camp
Upto 90 prominent artists would be participating in the Art Camp from September 27 to October 6, where the works produced during the event would be donated to the trust. The first batch of 50 artists would be participating from September 27-30 and the second lot of 40 artists would be part of the event from October 1-6.
