Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday said that Telangana state would be creating a world record if his dream project of creating Telangana Drinking Water Grid turns into a reality in the next four years.

At a review meeting held here, KCR said the government was planning to lay pipelines to an extent of 1.26 lakh km, which is nearly three times the circumference of the Earth.

The Chief Minister pointed out that this project comprised main trunk line of 5,227 km, secondary network of 45,809 km and distributor network of 75,000 km. He said that his dream was to see every house gets a tap connection for drinking water.

Both rural and urban areas should be covered through this scheme, he added. The water grid would also help in addressing the industrial needs with this project, KCR felt.

However, an in-depth study should be done on water requirements for households, commercial spaces, industries, hospitals, villages and cities to cater to the demands for the next 30 years, KCR said.

He emphasised on identifying contours in every district so that water could be easily supplied through gravity to nearby villages. He said Guddelugula Gutta in Siddipet constituency was one good example. It stores water from Lower Manair Dam and supplies drinking water to all nearby villages. KCR said in the past schemes were prepared to supply 30 litres of water to every person per day. However, this should be increased to 70 litres per day. He also felt that Rural Water Supply, Public Health and Metro Water Board should be integrated and brought under one roof to ensure better co-ordination to create the water grid.

Panchayat Raj Minister K Tarakarama Rao, Chief Secretary and principal secretaries of a few departments and senior officials took part in the meeting.
