Hyderabad: Telangana Information Technology and Panchayat Raj Minister K Taraka Rama Rao will soon be embarking on a major solar mission to reach out to 10,000 villages in the State which will have solar-powered street and domestic lighting. The TS government will take it up as a major project to be completed in five years.

The government proposes to take up this project in partnership with National Institute of Rural development and Panchayat Raj. KTR who visited NIRD Rural Technology Park on Thursday was impressed with the initiatives taken by it on the solar energy promotion front. He also visited the solar assembling and training unit and interacted with the trainers and the trainees.

The Minister held discussions with NIRD Director General Dr M V Rao on ways and means of tapping solar energy and taking advantage of it to offset the power shortage crises facing the State and tapping solar power as an alternative energy. He also enquired about the incentives being offered by the National Solar Mission and various other agencies working in tandem with the solar mission. He requested NIRD Director General to develop a concept in this regard for the Telangana so that solar energy can be tapped on a massive scale.

KTR said NIRD could help developing a comprehensive concept covering the entire gamut of supplying solar lighting, maintenance and training of rural personnel in this regard. The Telangana government would also involve local industries in all the 10 districts to partner with the State government in realising the solar mission. He said that he would come back to NIRD campus along with the team of officials to finalise a conceptual strategy in its endeavour to go the solar way.

RTP project director Siva Kumar and deputy project director Gangi Reddy and solar project consultant Mohamed Khan were present.
