Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao held a review meeting on this subject at Secretariat on Sunday. Telangana's share for minor irrigation from the Krishna and the Godavari rivers is 265 TMC and the TRS government was committed to make full use of it through tanks revival programme, he said adding that over 9,000 lakes would be revived with Rs 4,500 crores budget in the first year.

KCR directed authorities to undertake this drive as a people's movement rather than confining it to just the government. Volunteers of NSS, Scouts and Guides, NGOs and people from different walks of life besides NRIs should be invited to take part in this initiative, KCR said.

KCR instructed officials to transform water bodies in Assembly constituency headquarters as mini tank bund. Not only it would help in recharging the ground water table, even drinking water needs could be met, he stated.

KCR told Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao to take steps to fill vacancies in irrigation department.

He also instructed district collectors to conduct essay writing competitions on this issue in schools and colleges to sensitise students about advantages of revival of tanks.
