Warangal: Various programmes were held across the district marking ‘World AIDS Day’ on Monday.

At district headquarters, massive rallies and formation of human chains were held by students of schools and colleges, government officials, social workers, NSS volunteers and representatives of various non-governmental organisations.

The slogans for this year were ‘Zero HIV infections’, Zero stigma and discrimination’ and ‘Zero HIV-related deaths’. A public meeting was held at Public Gardens in Hanamkonda to highlight the motto and the need to address the issue in an urgent manner.

Addressing the gathering, Warangal (West) MLA D Vinay Bhaskar called upon people to put in efforts to achieve a HIV/AIDS-free Telangana and to fight against the stigma towards those affected.

Measures to boost the morale of those infected with the virus should be taken up extensively, he said. There are an estimated 23,000 patients suffering from HIV in Warangal district and most of them are youth. Red Ribbon clubs should act to spread awareness on safe blood transfusion. Main focus should be laid on sex workers, migrating labourers and truck drivers while spreading the campaign. Social and non-governmental organisations need to play an active role in AIDS prevention programmes, Vinay Bhaskar suggested.

Speaking on the occasion, Rural SP Ambar Kishor Jha stressed on the need to free the society from the menace of AIDS.Additional Joint Collector K Krishna Reddy, Medical and Health Regional Director Dr Nageshwar Rao, District AIDS control officer Raju, NSS coordinator B Suresh Lal, Nehru Yuva Kendra coordinator Manoranjan, District youth welfare officer Purushotham, STI Counselor at MGMH, Keerthy Sathish Kumar and others were present. Earlier, a rally was taken out by students of Kakatiya Mahila Degree College, NSS volunteers, students of AVV Junior and Degree Colleges, NGOs like MARI, Lodi, Sneha and Mytri. NSS officers K Srinivasa Rao, Victor Benarjee, R Kalyani and others participated in the rally. Later, a human chain was formed at Hanamkonda Chowrasta.

Marking the day, chairperson of District Child Welfare Committee, K Anitha Reddy, visited New Life HIV Children’s Home at Gorrekunta in Warangal. She interacted with the children and told the organisers to take proper care of the children.
