Issuing Indiramma coupons to contractors by taking Rs 1,000 as bribe

Madhira (Khammam): Transportation of sand is going on unabated with clandestine support from officials of Revenue Department in the villages of Rayapatnam, Tondalagopavaram and Khammampadu in Madhira mandal. Revenue officials are accepting bribes from contractors and issuing Indiramma coupons to carry out transportation of sand illegally.

Locals alleged that the Revenue officials were issuing coupons to contractors by accepting a bribe of Rs 1000 per coupon. Few days ago, people belonging to a certain village have caught a tractor which was transporting sand illegally and handed over it to a police station. An official from the Revenue Department made a call to police station and asked the police official as to why they were interfering in his jurisdiction. To avoid confrontation with the Revenue Department, police personnel have handed over the tractor to the Revenue Department.

Farmers of these villages are expressing anguish over depletion of groundwater levels with mining of sand. They said that they have to face severe water shortage for irrigation purpose in summer season. “We have brought to the notice of MRO that there is danger of drinking water shortage with illegal sand mining and transportation,” they said. According to reliable sources, a Revenue official had asked officials of Mining Department as to why they were conducting raids on sand reaches without permission from Revenue Department.

As per the rules, the Revenue officials should issue coupons to Indiramma beneficiaries for transportation of sand from reaches to their housing sites. Beneficiaries of Indiramma housing scheme have lamented that officials were not issuing coupons to them despite repeated requests.

Villagers have alleged that officials of Revenue Department were alerting tractor drivers carrying sand illegally if information was passed on to them about sand smuggling. People appeal to higher officials to take stern action against those contractors, who are involved in illegal sand transportation and implement WALTA enactment in its true spirit.
