Hyderabad: A techie was arrested for alleged links with the terror outfit, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), by the police at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad on Thursday. Denied direct visa to Syria, he was hoping to enter that country from Dubai.

  • He was arrested by police at Shamshabad airport
  • He was leaving for Dubai for onward travel to Turkey
  • He planned to sneak into Syria along with his partner
  • After doing MS in US, he launched campaign for IS
  • Said to be involved in indoctrination of local youth

According to police, Salman Moinuddin, 32, a resident of Bazarghat in Asifnagar here, was taken into custody while trying to board a flight to Dubai. Police recovered two expired passports, two smart phones, a laptop and other electronic gadgets from his possession.

"Salman did not manage to get direct visa to Syria for which he was travelling to Dubai and later to Syria via Turkey. He was planning to join his partner a UK national Nicky Joseph alias Nicky alias Nicole alias Ayesha, and travel to Syria, the ISIS stronghold. During his stay in US while pursuing his MS from Silicon Valley University, San Jose, in 2010, he came in contact with Nicky. He got her converted to Islam and also married her clandestinely. Nicky was then already married to a Dubai-based cardiologist Aforaly Paul,” the cops said.

"In 2014, after the establishment of Caliphate in Iraq and Syria, Salman and Nicky, who ostensibly had leaning towards Islamic fundamentalism, created various Facebook accounts using pseudonyms and started attracting people who were interested in joining the ISIS. On October 27 last year, when he was denied visa by the US authorities, he returned to India and through social media tried to contact the youth across the globe with an intention of taking them to Syria and Iraq for training," a senior police officer said. The officer also added that Salman created a secret group in Facebook 'Daula News Room' in which both he and Nicky were administrators. It has 188 members including Indians.

Salman came in contact with one Abu Al Barra Sami, an ISIS sympathiser based in Syria, and Abu Mohammad of Turkey, a facilitator for IS. They invited him to come to Turkey to sneak into Syria for training. During his stay in Hyderabad, Salman indoctrinated a few locals with the intention of taking them to Syria and Iraq, the officer added. Salman was arrested under Sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), Section 153 of the IPC and Section 66 of the IT Act.
