Hyderabad: The much-publicised Rs 38,500-crore BR Ambedkar Pranahita- Chevella Sujala Sravanthi multipurpose project is unlikely to get national project status till the Centre finds a solution to the inter-state water dispute with regard to the height of the project.

The Telangana government last week was informed by the Union Ministry of Water Resources that under the present circumstances it would not possible to accord national project status since the TS government has to seek fresh approval from the Central Water Commission on utilisation of Godavari waters which could rake up another controversy between the two Telugu-speaking states, according to top officials of the state Irrigation Department.

The Union ministry pointed out that there was no clarity yet on the use of quantum of water by the project. The DPR ( Detailed Project Report) prepared by the erstwhile AP government said that Pranahita-Chevella would irrigate 6,87,966 hectares in the northern districts of Telangana region by lifting 180 Thousand Million Cubic feet (TMC) of water. It would also provide drinking water to twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the officials said after the division of state, the T government needs to seek fresh approval from CWC on the utilisation of water.

The department was also informed that since the erstwhile united AP and Maharastra governments had entered into an agreement over submergence of small extent of area in the latter, the centre would not a take a decision on the national project status till Telangana and Maharastra states sign a fresh understanding on this issue.
