Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) failure in maintaining standards in laying the roads in the capital city left the civic body in deep trouble as the State government came out with a proposal to set up a city Road Development Corporation (RDC) for the proper maintenance of the roads in the corporation limits.

  • Use of sub standard material on BT roads causes damage of roads instantly on busy roads, a report says
  • Delay in repairs on stretches carrying heavy vehicular traffic causes frequent road accidents
  • Govt proposes to set up Road Development Corporation for proper maintenance of roads in city
  • Long-pending proposal to hand over roads maintained by R & B to corporation scrapped

An official report prepared by the Roads and Buildings Department and submitted to the government revealed that the roads laid by the contractors to whom the works were awarded by the GHMC failed in maintaining quality in the road laying works on the main roads as well as in the colonies. On the instructions of the government, the R&B Department recently conducted surveys on the quality of the roads in the city.

The Black Tap (BT) roads laid by the contractors on the busy areas have not more than six month life due to usage of substandard material, the report said that the coupled with the increasing vehicular traffic, the road network with poor quality has been damaged very early.

For instance, the road network connecting Hi-tech City to Panjagutta and Hi-tech city to Borabanda eroded within a month after the works completed in the last two years due to the use of low quality substances. At present, the GHMC was maintaining road network on the stretch of 450 km, out of the total 625 km network in the city.

The R&B was maintaining 190 km, including intercepting State highways, and the remaining 80km road was owned National Highway Authority. The R&B officials told The Hans India that the corporation also failed in repairing the damaged roads on time during monsoon resulting the increased number of road accidents on some busy stretches.

In the recently held high level meeting conducted by Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma with the R&B and GHMC officials discussed in detail the report where the Chief Secretary also pulled up the corporation officials for their negligence for poor maintenance of roads.

The officials said that the long pending proposal to hand over the roads maintained by the R&B to the GHMC has been withdrawn in the meeting after the report nailed the corporation. To find a permanent solution, the government came out with an idea of constituting road development corporation for the maintenance of the road network.

The proposal to construct multi -layer flyovers and elevated corridors at the cost of Rs 1500 crore would also come under the purview of the corporation. The proposal would be forwarded to Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao very soon to seek his approval.
