Hyderabad: Giving a boost to the flagship KG to PG free education scheme of TRS government, the School Education Department has proposed Rs 1,000 crore for the scheme in the upcoming budget.

At a pre-budget meeting held by the Education Minister Kadiyam Srihari with Finance and Civil Supplies Minister Eatala Rajender at Secretariat here on Wednesday, the School Education Department proposed a total budget of Rs 14,114 crore. Of the total, non-plan budget amounts to Rs 7,900, plan budget Rs 4,384 crore and Sarva Siksha Abhiyan Rs 1830 crore.

In the maiden budget of Telangana government for 2014-2015 year, the government has allocated Rs 3,510 crore for school education. Of the total, it had only allocated Rs 25 crore for KG to PG free education scheme. However, for the budget 2015-2016, the department has proposed Rs 1,000 crore under plan for free education scheme.

The free education scheme would be taken on the pilot basis from the next academic year and would be implemented on full scale only from 2016-2017. As part of this, the government is mulling to build one model school with Rs 50 crore in each constituency. Each school would house 4,000 to 5,000 students from class IV to intermediate. “The proposals are subjected to approval from the Finance department,” said an official of Directorate of School Education Department.

For the first time, the department has proposed Rs 100 crore for maintenance of government schools. So far, schools have been receiving Rs 3,000 per annum under Central scheme. With the proposed Rs 100 crore, schools are likely to get Rs 30,000 per annum. The department also proposed an additional Rs 40 crore for constructing of compound walls.

An official of the department said they had also proposed Rs 956 crore for the model schools, Rs 1568 crore for Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, Rs 127.52 crore for adult education and for State Council of Educational Research and Training.

In order to give more nourished food to the students in the mid-day meals scheme, the department has devised Rs 139.87 crore plan for class IX and X students and Rs 434 crore for class I to VIII students.
