Shortlisting six cities, Telangana government has sought “smart city” status for Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizambad, Khammam, Mahbubnagar and Ramagundam. The Government has submitted the shortlisted cities to the Centre for approval and urging the Centre to include these six cities to develop 100 smart cities across the country in the NDA government’s programme.


On the basis of population, ranging from 2 to 10 lakh, these cities were selected by the Officials. Telangana urban population, as per Census 2011, comprises 3.64 per cent of national urban population. Out of 100 across the country, the government hopes to get four smart cities for TS.


Located within a distance of 100 kilometeres from Hyderabad, the TS government also urged the Centre to develop seven municipalities as satellite townships for which Medchal, Bhongir, Gajwel, Peddamberpet, Vikarabaad, Sangareddy and Shadnagar municipalities are shortlisted. Already, Vikarabad has been selected by the Centre to develop as a smart city under JNNURM by allotting Rs135 crore.
