Hyderabad: The Telangana government is unwilling to take over administration of ESI hospital at Sanathnagar which is likely to be converted into a 500-bed super specialty hospital, unless the Centre agrees to permit them to run it as general hospital.

The medical college, a part of the hospital, has 100 seats.

The Centre had taken up the construction of super speciality hospital building in an area of 35 acres. But in January, the Centre came up with a new idea to exit from running medical colleges and sent a letter to state governments to take over the medical colleges. ESI has 11 medical colleges across the country.

Though initially, the state government showed some inclination towards accepting the proposal as the new state would get additional 100 medical seats, it now seems to be of the opinion that it would put heavy financial burden on the state ex-chequer.

The Central government which had taken up the construction of the building at an estimated cost of Rs 686 crore, has so far spent only Rs 469 crore. If the state government accepts the proposal it will not only have to spend the balance amount on the construction of the buildings but will also have to bear the salary bill of the faculty, buy hi-tech state of the art equipment and also take over the responsibility of maintenance.

According to rough estimates, the maintenance of a medical college-cum hospital alone is a over Rs 150 crore per annum. Added to this there will be problems like fee reimbursement etc. In view of this, the state government has conveyed their unwillingness to the Union Minister of state for Labour Bandaru Dattatreya and is likely to write an official letter this week.

According to sources, the Union Minister is learnt to have told the state government that though the government wants to exit from sector of medical education and would like the state governments to take over, it would continue to run the existing ESI hospital at Sanathnagar for some more time so that the issue could be sorted out and the beneficiaries do not suffer.
