Adilabad: The stage is set for removing silt from several tanks in Adilabad district, as they have become useless allegedly due to neglect of the previous governments. Two TS Ministers belonging to the district are to take part in the Mission Kakatitya programme scheduled to be taken up here on Sunday.

Adilabad was once known for its greenery with tanks full of water which was used for both irrigation and drinking purposes. Lush greenery was seen virtually everywhere. With the neglect of successive governments, over 50 per cent of the tanks have become useless with the area shrinking. Consequently, the crop area declined. With the TS government deciding to take up Mission Kakatiya, the administration has decided to de-silt 20 per cent of tanks in the district. In the first phase as many136 tanks are to be cleared of the piled up silt. Already tenders have been called for taking up the work. Subsequently 500 tanks are to be rid of silt by June for the benefit of farmers.

Ministers Jogu Ramanna and Indrakaran Reddy are to launch the work in Peddampet, Thosham, Tharod villages and in Mudhol and Nirmal constituencies. The administration has devised the programme to ensure active participation of people in the work.

According to Collector Jaganmohan, officials have conducted soil tests to ascertain whether the removed silt will be of any use for farmers. They found out that 17 of the 136 tanks have more traces of minerals. Hence, they have decided to use the silt to fill the disused wells in several villages. They are making arrangements to move the silt useful for farmers closer to their fields. It will be offered free of cost to those within two km range of tanks.

The government has decided to spend the ZP funds to meet the expenditure of shifting the silt for the benefit of far away farmers. The Agriculture Department officials have said the silt is useful to enrich the lands.

Farmers have urged the government to take action against those who occupied the tanks before de-silting them.
