Hyderabad: The Godavari Pushkaralu, being planned on the lines of Kumbh Mela, will have 88 ghats in Telangana alone, in the five districts through which the river flows. The 12-day event will see about 6 crore people taking holy dip in various towns on its banks.

Replying to a question, Endowments Minister A Indrakaran Reddy said the government was gearing up for the event with Rs 500 crore. The construction of connecting BT roads was being taken up by R&B and PR departments at a cost of Rs 185 crore and Rs 57 crore respectively. The government conducted three meetings since the beginning of February and the tender process had already begun. For sprucing up 46 temples, which would stage the event the Endowments department was spending Rs 13 crore. The government had set the deadline for completion of works by June 30, the Minister informed.

The Chief Minister said he had has also sought Rs 750 crore funds from the Central government for organising the Pushkaralu on a massive scale. He hoped that the President and the Prime Minister would also attend the celebrations.The Minister informed that the temple town of Bhadrachalam would be allocated more funds for the Pushkaralu. In each district, senior IAS officer would be monitoring the progress and would head a task force and DGP would be taking care of law and order situation during the 12-day period.

The government would also be installing CCTV cameras and the people would be kept informed about the programmes through websites, Reddy said. Responding to the observation made by Congress Legislature Party deputy leader in the Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir, the Minister agreed to conduct district level meetings involving collectors and public representatives for speeding up the works for providing smoother flow of 60 lakh population per day on an average.

The Minister also assured visiting of spots by higher officials and said the Chief Secretary would rope in all the departments for this. “We shall be monitoring progress of day,” he assured. The Telangana government which is gearing up for the Godavari Pushkaralu from July 14 to 25 will be speeding up works by organising meetings in five districts, which would host the mega spiritual confluence.
