The women in Khammam, Karimnagar and Warangal districts rushed to bangle stores following the rumours that ensuing Telugu New Year ‘Ugadi’ was cursed and in order to assuage the evil effects they should wear bangles. It was said that all the women must wear nine bangles in each hand in nine different colours to avoid harm to their husbands and children.

As a result, irrespective of caste and creed all the women made beelines at the fancy stores. Though the source of the rumour was not known, every street and corner in the villages and in the cities where bangle stores were located were crowded with women. Women had to wait for hours to buy bangles of the prescribed pattern.

Meanwhile, the bangle sellers were thankful to the brains behind the rumours as it helped them do good business but also clear old stocks.
