Hyderabad: Work on the metro station at Musi River bed is going on at a frantic pace but social activists and environmentalists are up in arms and are raising questions on the government’s eagerness to go ahead with the project, without consulting the stake holders. Dr Lubna Sarwath of Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL) asks, “The government announced the Musi rejuvenation project but there is no clarity on the Metro Rail Project.

What are the modalities and how did the Irrigation Department give permission to go ahead with the construction of metro station?” The metro rail works are being undertaken without proper solid waste management, measures on pollution of the water body, debris management, heritage protection and permissions from the irrigation department, allege social activists.

Work in progress for Metro Station near the Musi River

Prof K Purushottam Reddy, environment conservationist says, “The detailed project report is nowhere to be seen either on Hyderabad Metro Rail, government of Telangana and L&T websites. How can the government take up the works without a project plan?” Echoing the same sentiment, Dr B V Subba Rao says, “Without revival methodologies for the Musi River, any work would be detrimental. Huge pipes are being laid, pits dug up and another channel created leading to the change in the course of the river bed.”
