Warangal: Barely four months are left for the beginning of the new academic year, but the work on establishing Kaloji University of Health Sciences in Warangal is yet to get underway, leaving many people confused whether the varsity would start functioning this year. Apart from setting up a makeshift office at Kakatiya Medical College (KMC), there has been no forward movement.

It’s been more than six months since the State government announced that it would set up Telangana’s health university in Warangal, named after poet Kaloji Narayana Rao. It may be recalled that after the State bifurcation, the NTR University of Health Sciences went to the successor state of Andhra Pradesh as it is located in Vijayawada. In September 2014, the government sanctioned a release of Rs 5 crore to provide basic infrastructure such as offices of Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and accommodation for support staff of the varsity.

The plan is to enable the varsity temporarily function from the premises of KMC which is spread over 125 acres. The health varsity, which will have jurisdiction over as many as 25 medical colleges, including those under AYUSH apart from nursing colleges, hasn’t seen any progress except for the appointment of Suresh Chandra, Principal Secretary (Medical & Health) as the first Vice-Chancellor of the varsity.

Although Prof B Raju of Osmania Medical College was appointed as the Registrar of the varsity on January 13, the order was kept in abeyance within a week by the State until further orders. Though there is need for at least 150 personnel, besides academic and executive councils, to manage affairs such as administration, admissions, examinations and accounts, the government does not seem to be doing anything in this regard.

With the Telangana EAMCET slated for May 14, it remains to be seen how the government would handle the counseling process. According to sources, in the Medical and Health Department, the government is likely to entrust the duty of conducting the counseling to JNTU, Hyderabad, which is the nodal agency of the EAMCET.

When asked about the fate of the varsity, former Deputy Chief Minister T Rajaiah said; “During my stint as the Health Minister, I have done my bit by achieving the health university. I sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the varsity. Not even a single rupee has been spent on varsity establishment work till now.” It may be mentioned here that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had openly hit out at Dr Rajaiah for announcing the establishment of the health university in Warangal.
