Karimnagar: The police have made Sardapur village of Sircilla mandal as the first village in the district to become completely literate with the cooperation of the people. Along with the neighbouring Jaggaraopalle, Sardapur has a population of 950 and a majority of them are dependent on agriculture. The police officials decided to adopt the village and make it total literate.Although Sardapur village is situated at a stone’s throw from the revenue divisional headquarters, Sircilla, it remained undeveloped.

DSP Damera Narasaiah and his team comprising Circle Inspector of Police G Vijay Kumar and the village elders decided to make the village hundred per cent literate. The police along with the village panchayat leaders went around each house in the village and prepared a list of illiterates, numbering 154 and explained to them about the advantages of education and persuaded them to study.

The police along with the officials and village elders started a night school in September last year and entrusted the task of educating them to Padma, coordinator of Saakshar Bharat, who selected 20 youths to educate the illiterate villagers in three months. The illiterates used to work in the daytime and during the nights attend the class everyday without fail. As a result, the village could become completely literate even before the stipulated period.

Speaking to the media here on Sunday, Sardapur sarpanch Aggi Ramulu and Saakshar Bharat coorodinator Padma lauded the efforts of the police and the villagers in making the village completely literate. Padma said that with the active cooperation of the villagers, they could transform the village in just two-and-a half months. Srilatha, Peddur MPTC, said that they would now strive to develop the other villages in the district taking Sardapur as a model village.
