Hyderabad: The flagship Telangana Drinking Water Grid project faced early setback even before its inauguration. Advisor Umakanth Rao, who was specially roped in to ensure speedy execution of the project, quit his post unexpectedly on May 18. Baffled government, took alternative measure by appointing another retired Chief Engineer C Gyaneshwar, as the new advisor.

This development came at a time when Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is planning to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inauguration of the pylon built with a cost of Rs 1.96 crore, so it took everyone by surprise. According to government sources, lack of co-ordination between the higher-ups led to this situation.

The Advisor and Rural Water Supply officials were not on same page regarding the project for quite some time. Government also felt that this was hampering the project, meanwhile, Umakanth himself stepped down. He sent his resignation letter to Principal Secretary (Panchayat Raj) Raymond Peter through his car driver.

The senior IAS officer is understood to have brought the issue to the notice of Panchayat Raj Minister K Tarakarama Rao (who is on US tour) after which the resignation was accepted and new appointment was made.
