The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Khammam district is a pale shadow of its past glory. The district which secured three Assembly and the Khammam Parliament seat in the 2009 elections and more than 250 gram panchayats in a total of 758 in 2013, is in a shambles wilting under the onslaught inflicted by the ruling TRS with its ‘Operation Akarsh’.

Khammam: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Khammam district is a pale shadow of its past glory. The district which secured three Assembly and the Khammam Parliament seat in the 2009 elections and more than 250 gram panchayats in a total of 758 in 2013, is in a shambles wilting under the onslaught inflicted by the ruling TRS with its ‘Operation Akarsh’.

If the 2013 Mini Mahanadu came up with a call for a concerted effort to win the panchayat polls, the Sunday’s Mini Mahanadu meeting is looking to regain its past glory in the district as a host of its leaders, especially after the exit of its senior leader Tummala Nageswara Rao, made a beeline to the TRS.

Even at the height of Telangana movement, the TRS has never been a force in the district politics. It may be mentioned here that the party had won just one gram panchayat. The lone gram panchayat it won unanimously was due to the alleged support of the Maoists.

Khammam district, once a bastion for the Left Parties, became a stronghold for the Congress and TDP in the last decade. The alleged ascendency war between the two bigwigs – Tummala and MP Nama Nageswara Rao – of the district cost the party dearly in the 2014 general election. As a result, the party had to face a humiliation by winning just lone seat of the Sattupalli Assembly constituency (Sandra Venkata Veeraiah).

If this was a huge setback for the party, the exit of Tummala was a death knell for it as the loss didn’t stop with him. He joined the TRS with a horde of leaders including the then MLC Balasani Lakshminarayana, party district president Kondabala Koteswara Rao, Khammam Zilla Parishad chairperson G Kavitha, District Cooperative Marketing Society Chairman A Anjaiah and District Cooperative Bank Chairman Muvva Vijay Babu besides scores of MPTCs, ZPTCs and sarpanches.

Seeing the large number of leaders and crowd from Khammam turned up for Tummala’s joining TRS at the TRS headquarters in Hyderabad, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao said the event should have been organised in the Nizam College Grounds. It sums up the pathetic story of the TDP.

Meanwhile, TDP State observer Revuri Prakash Reddy and Kukkatpally MLA Krishna Rao are expected to oversee the election of the district committees of the party and its various subsidiary wings on Sunday’s Mini Mahanadu at Ganesh Gardens here. The party leaders will discuss and chalk out plans to regain its fading glory during the meeting. It’s learnt that the party will retain Tulluri Brahmaiah as the district president.
