Hyderabad: Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy on Tuesday issued orders suspending four constables attached to Musheerabad police station on the charge of assaulting a non-resident Indian (NRI) and his friends on June 25. The constables suspended are M Hanumantha Rao, K Narayana, K Rajender and K Suresh Kumar.

Apart from it, cases were registered against two sub-inspectors, Sai Kumar and V Sampath, besides 12 other policemen of Musheerabad police station. The NRI, Vasu Mallapuram, on Monday approached the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) accusing police of torturing him and his friends.

The SHRC directed the Police Commissioner to submit a report by July 16. On the directive of the SHRC, Mahender Reddy directed DCP (Central) V B Kamalasan Reddy to register a case and start investigation. “A criminal case under Section 324 IPC (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) has been registered against the policemen for assaulting the NRI and his friends.

An inquiry has been initiated and disciplinary action will be taken against those involved,” ACP (Chikkadpally) J Narsaiah said. The incident, which took place on June 25, came to light after Vasu, approached the SHRC complaining of police brutality, the DCP said.
