Hyderabad: The Telangana State government intends to replace Governor as the chancellor of the universities with experts. This proposal was discussed during a review meeting on State universities chaired by the Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao, at Chief Minister’s Camp Office here on Tuesday.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister felt that it was difficult for one chancellor in the State to oversee all varsities. He said it might be better if an expert in a particular field was appointed as chancellor for a particular varsity. Currently, the Governor of the State is chancellor for all the universities in the State.

Highly placed sources, who attended the meeting, said the Chief Minister was of the view that under one chancellor the universities administration was not up to the mark and universities had lost their credibility as there was not proper control. “Administration took a beating, there was no check on universities and even there were no sanctioned posts in them.

As the government funds these universities, there should be some check on them,” sources said. The Chief Minister said that universities were functioning in a haphazard manner and they need to be streamlined. He further said there was need to formulate new universities act to the requirement of the Telangana State Sources said the Chief Minister was of the view that government should have authority to appoint chancellors to the universities.

He stressed the need for State Council of Higher Education to function as nodal agency for all the universities, sources added. The government would bring in amendments to the Universities Act to ensure that it would conform to the needs of the State, he said and added that there was a need to formulate guidelines for the appointment of vice-chancellors and registrars.
