Hyderabad: As onion prices have touched Rs 50 a kg in the open market, Telangana government is in the process of making onions available to consumers at Rs 20 per kg at select centres across the State from August 5. Tomatoes will also be sold at a reasonable price.


Marketing Minister T Harish Rao said here on Friday that 100 tonnes of onion would be procured every day from Nasik (Maharashtra) and Kurnool (AP) by the government. To check irregularities only 2 kg would be sold per head. Stock will be available at 40 outlets including Rythu Bazars in the city and Revenue Division headquarters in the districts, he said.


The government will encourage onion farming from next year to meet huge demand in the State. Horticulture department would be rolling out subsidies to encourage farmers to sow onion.The State government has written to Centre to release some amount from Market Stabilising funds to meet price escalation of onions. Also it has set apart Rs 100 crore irrespective of Centre coming to the rescue or not, Harish said.

New initiative

Meanwhile, the marketing wing has introduced a new scheme wherein watchmen at apartment complexes could now earn additional income by selling vegetables. The department would supply vegetables at wholesale prices to them, who in turn could sell them with ten per cent margin.
