Deficit rainfall has hit sowing operations in Nizamabad district. The district has so far received 228.2 mm rainfall as against normal rainfall of 509.6 mm. All 36 mandals in the district recorded 40 to 71 per cent less rainfall. In Kamareddy, Bodhan and Nizamabad revenue divisions the rainfall recorded was 52 per cent less than normal.

Nizamabad: Deficit rainfall has hit sowing operations in Nizamabad district. The district has so far received 228.2 mm rainfall as against normal rainfall of 509.6 mm. All 36 mandals in the district recorded 40 to 71 per cent less rainfall. In Kamareddy, Bodhan and Nizamabad revenue divisions the rainfall recorded was 52 per cent less than normal.


The Agriculture Department could cover only 50 per cent of total 4,14,600 hectares targeted during the kharif season. The officials planned to promote paddy crop in 1.5 lakh hectares, but could cover only 34,000 hectares. Of it, crop in 15,000 hectares was damaged because of dry spell.


Out of total targeted area under soya crop in 1.5 lakh hectares, but only 1.27 lakh hectares was covered. The soya crop withered in red soil areas. The crop in black soil area can be saved only if there was rainfall in coming few days. Maize was sown in 41,000 hectares as against normal 55,000 hectares, cotton in 16,000 hectares, sugar cane in 6,500 hectares, and turmeric in 12,500 hectares and pulses in 20,000 hectares.


In Nizamabad district the all major and medium irrigation projects dried up. Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP) has only 6 tmcft of water.The other medium irrigation projects Pocharam and Ramadugu projects already dried up. The Joint Director of Agriculture, M Narsimha, said contingency plans were made in case dry spell continued. Alternative crops like Bengal gram, Sunflower, Hybrid Jowar, Soft Flower and pulses would be promoted.
