The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation dismissed some of the sanitary workers during the strike recently.

The leaders of the Left parties and the municipal workers demanded that the wages of the sanitary workers be increased. Addressing the striking workers at the Hyderabad District Collectorate, CPI State Secretary Chada Venkat Reddy criticised the Chief Minister, K Chandrashekara Rao for adopting “undemocratic methods” in handling the strike of the municipal workers.

Terming the Chief Minister’s silence on the issue was unjustifiable, the leader stressed on their demand for a wage hike on a par with government employees and immediate reinstatement of the sacked GHMC workers. The CPI leader further warned that if the government continued its adamant attitude on the issue, then, it would have to face serious consequences.

Backed by seven unions which include CITU, FTU, BMS, HMS, IFTU, and AITUC, workers of these unions staged protests at all municipal offices across the state. About 300 hundred agitators were arrested in the city limits and shifted to various police stations.
