Fever hospital hits century
Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Tropical and Communicable Diseases, popularly known as Fever Hospital at Nallakunta completes 100 years of its service on Thursday. Located in Nallakunta in Hyderabad, Fever Hospital has been serving the poorest section of society of all regions in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.

Located in Nallakunta in Hyderabad, Fever Hospital has been serving the poorest section of society of all regions in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.
Despite numerous corporate and private hospitals coming up, the century-old Fever Hospital’s popularity had not come down. Fever Hospital was first established on August 20, 1915 at Erranna Gutta. It was shifted to Nallakunta in 1923. The Nizam of Hyderabad had the Quarantine Hospital constructed at Nallakunta as it was considered “city outskirts”.
The hospital used to be referred as Koranti by the locals, which is the corrupted form of Quarantine. The hospital's name was changed to Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Tropical and Communicable Diseases in 1997. Explaining the uniqueness of the hospital, Dr K Shankar, Superintendent, said most of the patients were from poor and middle-classes.
Fever Hospital, which is famous for treating dog bite cases, treats nearly 50 cases on a given day. “Last year we treated swine flu cases. We are treating dengue cases efficiently,” said Dr Shankar.
