Hyderabad: You may be fighting for a neighbourhood school in your area for long, but it is not so in case of a neighbourhood bar! The government is so considerate that it has decided to provide a bar without asking in your locality.
Apparently in a bid to increase more revenue from liquor sales, the Telangana government has approved the proposal to allot one bar each for every 13,000 population in all Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.
Earlier, this condition was applicable to only Hyderabad and Secunderabd city limits.The order, issued on Wednesday by Principal Secretary (Excise and Commercial Taxes) Ajay Misra, states that in the GHMC area, for every 13,000 population, one bar will be granted. If the number of applications is more than the permissible number of bars, the selection will be made on the basis of draw of lots, it states.
With the new rules, the number of bars will be increased to nearly 100 from 60 in the GHMC limits. In municipalities other than the GHMC, the Excise and Prohibition Department is granting one bar licence for every 30,000 population.
However, bar licences will be continued to be granted to the restaurants run by 3-Star and above category hotels located in the GHMC, municipal corporations, municipalities, tourism centres, nagara panchayats without any restrictions.
