Hyderabad: Differences cropped up between the Chemists and Druggists Association and Greater Hyderabad Retail Medical Shops Association over call for shutdown of medical shops across the State on September 28.

The Drug Control Administration (DCA) officials conducted checks on medical shops on September 9, 10 across the State. The DCA issued notices to 336 shops to close them for 11 days as punishment for selling medicines without prescriptions.

However, the Telangana Chemists and Druggists Association urged DCA Director Akun Sabharwal to spare its members this time and promised that the practice of selling medicines without prescription would not be repeated.

Association president S Venkatapathi said they had approached Health Minister Dr C Laxma Reddy, Papa Rao, Adviser to government and Rajiv Sharma, Chief Secretary. But their efforts had failed to convince the authorities.

At last, they were compelled to call for shutdown of all medical shops across the State on September 28. Meanwhile, the newly recognised Hyderabad Retail Medical Shops Association opposed the call.

Association president Ranga Ravinder Gupta said over 8,000 medical shops were under their association and they were not supporting the call for shutdown. “Without consulting us, the Telangana Chemists and Druggists Association has given the call for shutdownl.

For the sake of citizens, we will open the medical shops on September 28,” Ravinder Gupta said.
