Hyderabad: Osmania General hospital and Helping Hands Foundation have teamed up to provide a new lease of life to six young farmers, who attempted suicide, by conducting highly complex Tracheal Reconstruction surgeries.

The six farmers, who consumed pesticide, suffered from a condition called “Tracheal Stenosis.” It is in layman’s term “narrowing of the airways,” caused by prolonged ventilator support, resulting in difficulty in breathing.

Dr C G Raghuram, Superintendent at OGH and Head of the Department Anaesthesia said, “In such cases the trachea has a tendency to narrow and the whole phenomenon is termed as Post Intubation tracheal Stenosis.”

B Santosh, a-28-year old farmer from Amrutapur village, Nizamabad district, who took land on lease cultivated cotton, slipped debts due to crop failure. Santosh attempted suicide by consuming phosphorus-based pesticide and collapsed in his house.

He was brought to OGH in a critical condition and was on ventilator support for over a fortnight.Though doctors at OGH saved his life, he developed breathing difficulty due to tracheal stenosis.

The doctors at OGH tried to dilate the airways by putting a stent but this worked only for couple of months and once again symptoms of tracheal stenosis recurred.

Similar were the cases of S Krishna (24) from Mahboobnagar district, G Lalita, (28) from Chevella in Ranga Reddy district, B Veeranna 20 years from Khammam district, Savitiri (32), P Narasimha (28) Nacharam, Medak district and A Naryana (30) from Mahaboobnagar district. The patients progress well after the surgery, said Dr G Srinivas, Professor and HOD cardiothoracic Surgeon at OGH.

Since Aaryogyasri scheme does not cover ‘tracheal reconstruction’ surgeries, OGH approached Mujtaba Hasan Askari, president, Helping Hand Foundation (HHF), with a fervent appeal to support these patients.

Khurram Askari, Managing Director at Insight Outreach (P) Ltd, sponsored the cost of the Duron Stents of Rs 80,000 each.
