Hyderabad: The BJP-TDP combine has found itself in predicament in choosing a strong candidate for Warangal Lok Sabha byelection. The leaders of both the parties feel that the survival of their parties is at stake if they fail to demonstrate their clout in the election.

It has led to the leaders of both the parties seeking out a strong candidate to give a tough fight to the ruling TRS party. Though the state unit suggested certain names as probable candidates, the BJP high command, according to sources, wants to take more time to assess the situation before making official announcement of its candidate. The BJP national president Amit Shah has reportedly spoken to TDP national president N Chandrababu Naidu over phone and discussed the strategy to be adopted in byelections and the standing of various candidates. Both Amit Shah and Naidu, the sources say, feel that winning the byelections will not be a cakewalk for TRS. They are said to be of the view that the combine should field a strong candidate who can give tough fight to the ruling party. They also reportedly feel that the Congress cannot field a strong candidate and it has left the combine a chance to prove its strength in Warangal district.

The TBJP sent the names of over 10 candidates, including former TRS leader G Vijayarama Rao. The other probable candidate the BJP intends to field are A Chandrasekhar , G Parameshwar, also-ran in 2014 election and Devaiah, an NRI from USA.

Sources said that Naidu and the BJP chief will decide the candidate after discussions. The possibility of a dark horse emerging is also not ruled out by leaders of both the parties, TDP sources said.

In 2014 election, TRS won the seat by securing 56.33 per cent of the votes, followed by Congress with 22 per cent and the TDP – BJP finishing third with only 15.95 per cent votes.
