Hyderabad: Leader of the Opposition in Telangana Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir has accused Panchayat Raj Minister K Taraka Rama Rao of shedding crocodile tears on the issue of Gulf migrants.

Addressing a press conference at Congress Legislature Party office here on Friday, Shabbir Ali said the TRS government had failed to take steps to mitigate the sufferings of Gulf migrants for the last 17 months. KTR, however, had enacted a drama in view of the Warangal byelection by meeting External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to plead the case of Gulf victims, he said.

"Nearly 10 lakh people from Telangana State, especially those from Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Old City of Hyderabad, are working in Gulf countries and the State government had never bothered to find out their living conditions. About 12,000 of them were languishing in different prisons in Gulf countries on various charges and nearly 400 died. But, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had so far failed to review the issue, he said.

Shabbir Ali recalled that the TRS, in its election manifesto, had promised to set up a separate Ministry to deal with NRI affairs. "Many Gulf workers believed that the TRS would do something for their welfare and also campaigned and voted for the party in 2014 elections. Instead of taking positive measures, KCR had almost scrapped NRI Department, stopped allocation of funds.

Shabbir Ali questioned KTR's authority to make a representation to the Centre on the issue. "In which way the Panchayat Raj Minister is connected with the issues of Gulf migrant workers,” he asked.

He felt that KCR should have met the External Affairs Minister and the Prime Minister to ensure that the Gulf Migrants return safely. He recalled that the government under the leadership of late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy made all efforts for the safety of Gulf migrants.
