Hyderabad: Encroachments on footpath could soon become a criminal offence, as the City Traffic Police is gearing up to crack the whip on violators. The police have approached the State government requesting an approval to book cases against footpath encroachers under Section 447 of IPC which deals with criminal trespassing. Under this section, violators would either be imprisoned for a period of three months or may have to pay fine up to Rs 500, or both, as decided by the court.

Answering a query on the subject, Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Jitender said, “Invoking a criminal charge will definitely change the attitude of violators. Imprisonments handed out to drunk drivers have brought a change and the number of cases of deaths due to drunk driving has dramatically come down. Similar will be the outcome of footpath encroachment. We are working towards ensuring complete usage of footpaths and pathways by the public in the city.”
