Hyderabad: Although the constitution has provided reservation quota of 27 per cent to Other Backward Classes (OBCs), less than 8 per cent reservation has been implemented in giving jobs in the government department and institution, observed Justice V Eshwaraiah, Chairperson, National Commission for Backward Classes.

Addressing a conference on ‘25 Years of OBC Reservations: A Roadmap for Constitutional Rights’ organised by Other Backward Classes Association (OBCA) at University of Hyderabad here on Friday, Eshwaraiah said, there was no specific mechanism adopted by the government (Unions and States) to ensure the given percentage of reservation for the OBCs.

He lamented that there was apparent apathy among the concerned government authority in implementing the reservation quota for the OBCs in all departments at all levels as a result of which large number of seats in groups ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ reserved for this category are lying vacant in all departments of the Central and State governments.

Justice Eshwaraiah added that even as the population of OBCs in India constitutes about 55 per cent of the total population, the reservation given to this section was merely 27 per cent which is very less.
