The State government is mulling starting e-Agri-Markts in Mababubnagar from next Kharif so that the farmers can sell their produce online for a profit

Mahbubnagar: In an effort to revive the agricultural marketing system, the State government is contemplating to launch ‘e-Agri Markets’ for farmers in Mahabubnagar. According to officials, by using ‘e-Agri Markets’, farmers can sell their agricultural produce like paddy, jowar, bajra, maize, cotton, etc online.

“The main aim of introducing e-agri markets in the district is to protect the farmers from exploitation by local traders. Further, e-marketing will ensure transparency and accountability and there is no scope for forming syndicate among traders, as it is open to a wide network of traders across the country. It will also curb zero-business by traders, who are avoiding service tax to the government.

Overall, with e-Agri Markets, both the farmers and the government will be benefited mutually. The State government is proposing to launch the e-Agri Markets by next kharif season in Badepally, Mahabubnagar, Shadnagar, Gadwal and Nagarkurnool markets,” said A Sharath, Director of Marketing Department, while speaking to The Hans India.

If this is materialised, the farmers can not only sell their produce to the local bidder online, but the e-commerce system will also allow anybody from across the State to quote their bids. With this, the farmers will gain in a big way as they are able to sell their products on par with the maximum selling price (MSP) set by the government.

This will also increase competition among the traders and based on the demand, the farmers will have a chance to sell their products for more than MSP and get benefited by that. Earlier, farmers were forced to sell their produce at the nearby local agriculture market yards while the local traders, who formed a syndicate, used to exploit the farmers by depriving them of getting good price for their produce. It will also help the government to put a check on the zero business policy adopted by the traders causing huge loss to the exchequer.

At present, the State government is contemplating to launch this new e-Agri Market project by the next Kharif season in the State. As part of this plan, a proposal has been sent to the Central government and it is expecting a green signal from the Centre very soon.

If things fall in place, soon the farmers in the backward district will get some relief and can reap the benefits of their hard work.
