Hyderabad: Tomato prices have hit an all-time high both in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh ranging between Rs 60 and 100 per kg.

Agricultural Marketing Department officials said that the main reason for the skyrocketing of prices was due to drastic fall in the production in Madanapalle area of Chittoor district, the biggest producer of the vegetable. In Madanapalle, on an average, tomato is cultivated in an area of 7,200 hectares (about 18,000 acres). This year, most of the crop withered away due to prolonged dry spell and the latest heavy rains damaged the standing crop in about 3,500 hectares.

The wholesale prices shot up to Rs 90 per kg in the Madanapalle market. Further, due to incessant rains, tomato crop, in many areas, developed ‘alternaria spot’ disease thereby resulting in low price for the produce. Also, the spot disease has decreased the shelf life of tomatoes.

Though tomatoes are grown in some areas of Telangana, low production in the districts like Ranga Reddy and parts of Nalgonda triggered acute shortage of tomatoes, the officials said.

The officials said the arrival of tomatoes had decreased to 190 tonnes on November 12 from 320 tonnes two weeks back in the Bowenpally market. Wholesale traders here buy tomatoes from Madanapalle and sell to retailers. The vegetable supply dwindled to less than 200 tonnes in just two weeks. The maximum price per quintal last year was Rs 1,200 and the current price is around Rs 7,000 (this week).

Tomato prices have doubled as the sowing area of vegetables and celeries came down drastically in Nizamabad district following deficit rainfall and ongoing dry spell.

In Nizamabad district, tomato crop is sown in Armoor, Balkonda, Nizamabad Rural and other areas of the district and exported to Maharashtra, Karnataka states and Hyderabad during the season.

Now, local traders are importing tomatoes from neighbouring Adilabad, Madanapalle of Andhra Pradesh and Nagpur of Maharashtra.

The officials said the department has taken steps to bring down the prices by making required quantity of tomatoes available from neighbouring Karnataka and Tamil Nadu States.
