A total of 62 mandals in the poverty-stricken district yet to get gas connections under the government’s much-hyped programme

Mahabubnagar: The much-touted Deepam scheme meant for providing gas connections to families belonging to the below poverty line (BPL) in the district seems to be in doldrums as the officers are not able to meet the set targets in time.

Till date, 75,000 Deepam connections have been sanctioned to the district, out of which only 535 have been grounded and remaining are in the process of identification and online updating, according to Raja Rao, District Civil Supplies Officer (DSO).
Except two mandals - Midjil and Kollapur - in the district, the district Civil Supplies officials are way behind to reach the targets of providing gas connections to the poor in 62 mandals out of 64 total mandals under the scheme in the district, according to officials.
As per official statistics obtained from the departments concerned, out of 75,000 gas connections sanctioned under Deepam scheme to the district, so far the officials could register only 55,631 through online, of which only 39,749 are been recognised as genuine.
Locals allege that the carefree attitude of the officials who are supposed to implement the much-hyped scheme in rural areas is leading to the problem. Though the Minister for Higher Industries Jupally Krishna Rao conducted a review last week and directed the officials to complete the process by the end of this month, there has been no action by the officials to reach the Deepam targets.

In fact, the major hurdle in the scheme is lack of awareness among the poor people, according to experts. The officials are not conducting awareness programmers to sensitise the poor people and discourage them from using firewood.
Instead, they are sitting on the files thus delaying approvals for connections to the candidates recommended by the local leaders and other authorised sources, they allege. When contacted, officials in the Civil Supplies department in the district assured that the process of identifying the beneficiaries would end by end of this month or by the first week of December.
They said they would meet the set targets and sanction all the 75,000 connections. “Identification of beneficiaries is almost complete. However, we are facing a problem in uploading them online. I have asked all the mandal tahasildars to complete the process and submit a report by the end of this month. Most probably, we will reach 100 per cent target by month-end,” said Raja Rao.
